Just Let Them Have Treats

Trick or Treating has been so scrutinized lately you’d forget it was a fun activity for kids. The debate between actual trick or treating and trunk or treats has adults blue in the face. Talking about a simple childhood activity, like rules have to be followed.

I have some candy goodie bags out where I live. Most of the kids have grown up, but I would rather be overprepared than the house who had nothing from the start. My city, like many others has trunk or treats too. Whatever works best for the parents and the kids. Hopefully some kids can have both. I grew up with regular trick or treating in a Connecticut suburb, and one random year of trunk or treating at a local mall. I’m told my parents loved the mall and so did I, but the next year I wanted real trick or treating again.

As an adult I would learn real trick or treating is a privilege. Some kids have always had to go outside of where they live. Neighborhoods with obvious crime, and people who might not be able to afford the candy. The part people avoid talking about is how sometimes those kids were brought to nicer neighborhoods. Not by walking, but by cars and vans. Kids who wanted candy. Thats it. The adults didn’t have message boards to complain, but they found real life places to gossip. Even today richer neighborhoods receive extra trick or treaters, but truk or treats have made it easier for families to have a safe place to go. Closeby and meant for any kid. Even families in the nicer neighborhoods are going. Sometimes the trunk or treat is even a party for the kids. Some rural places, even ones with money, have always done trunk or treats because the homes are too far apart. Some cities have always had storefront trunk or treats. Just because it’s becoming more popular, doesn’t make it bad.

I know all this rambling has probably been typed by someone else, but just let the kids have their treats. Whether they go house to house, apartment to apartment, or to a trunk or or treat, keep your thoughts to yourself. Toight is about happy children getting candy. Also, side note, if they’re respectful I don’t care if adults get treats too.
